In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, Washington Governor Jay Inslee announced a “Safe Start” phased reopening plan he and public health officials will take for resuming recreational, social, and business activities throughout the state. Every phase will still require social distancing and appropriate health precautions including the use of personal protective equipment in a number of workplaces.
King County (including Seattle) is currently in Phase 2, which allows for partial re-opening of some businesses and activities and limited social gatherings with five or fewer people outside the household. It is mandatory for everyone in Washington State to use a face covering in public areas and shared spaces, both indoors and outdoors, as directed by Gov. Jay Inslee and Secretary of Health John Wiesman. There are some exemptions to the DOH order, including people with certain disabilities or health conditions, people who are deaf or hard of hearing, and children under the age of 2. (Officials encourage use of a face covering by children ages 3-5 if possible. Children 5 and older must wear a face covering.) Additionally, face coverings may be removed in certain circumstances such as when sitting and eating or drinking at a restaurant, and while outdoors in public areas as long as a six-foot distance is kept from others.
